Work experience - day 6

Description of work undertaken

Today in class I finished making my first working menu using scaleform, kismet, flash and unrealscript. I used a logo from the video game logo as a demonstration. When you click the play button it loads dm-deck. In my final design I plan to have an options and an exit button. The buttons also have two seperate states for mouseover.

challenges encountered
Getting kismet wired properly.
Because the menu is running through the engine, when I loaded the menu the player hud, weapon and character would show. I was able to fix this by going into kismet and enabling cinematic mode to remove the hud and sounds and world properties to remove player inventory so the player would not spawn with a gun.

Work experience - day 5

Description of work undertaken
I began work from making a demo menu from scratch and bringing it into udk, hooking it up to kismet and to get it functioning


challenges encountered
I ran into several challenges, the biggest one being unrealscript, for my menu to behave the way I wanted it do I needed to compile script and drag it into a UDK subdirectory, this proved to be a challenge as I have never dealt with code in this way before. I also had issues with functions of kismet and understanding what each node did exactly.

Work experience - day 4

Description of work undertaken
Carrying on from day 3, I continued reading tutorials on scaleform, flash and udk and watched several UDK tutorials. As far as work on my actual menu went today was primarily research.

Understanding scaleform, actionscript, unrealscript.

Flash, UDK, youtube for video guides and unreal developers network for written documentation on things like scaleform and unrealscript.

Work experience day 3

Description of work undertaken
I worked on menu prototypes in flash, I did several mock ups. I found a design I am happy with. I used buttons from cooltext with different states and a simple blue background with the cavan college logo.After I went in detail over tutorials for scaleform so that I will be able to implement my menu once I have my final version of my menu in flash. I read tutorials and quick start guides on the udn (unreal developers network)

Work experience -day 2

Description of work undertaken
I was told to Watch tutorials on scaleform , flash and Unreal development kit. Plan out what needs to be done on a sheet. I did a timeline, sketches and ideas.

Work Experience - Day 1

Description of work undertaken
We started off the morning by getting our work from Padraig at the staff room, our assignment was to collect accurate measurements for the college on the inside and out, we were given an device that measured distances using a laser and normal measuring tape. We started at 9:30am and finished at roughly 12:00. At 2:00pm we were given our next assignment, we had to photograph all objects in the college and surfaces. We finished this at 4:00pm

challenges encountered
Some rooms had windows which made getting the measurements accurate difficult. Also getting a proper measurement for the stairs was difficult due to the geometry.

The weather outside made it difficult to get good shots of certain objects.

UDK level - Static meshes

Just started placing static meshes for the beginning of my level. The player emerges from a vault in the mountains which extends into a destroyed military base as he explores onwards. work in progress.

Udk Progress - 2/2/12

Today in class we were working on our UDK levels for our 3D game project. It is still at an early stage. The idea is to have buildings in the middle and hills and mounds around it.
